For this assignment, I decided to take a route in which I explored continuation of gesture, but also playing with gender stereotypes and norms. I got the idea from when I was in my bathroom and the lights kept flickering while I was looking in the mirror, at first it seemed annoying but as I stared into my reflection I thought to myself, “what would it be like if I were to swap positions with someone else?” I started with some sketches of how I wanted the entirety of the video to look, it’s a simple image that shows the transition from male to female literally and figuratively. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to play around with masculine and feminine tropes such as shaving or putting makeup on as part of daily/weekly routines. Progressively I decided to make it go from masculine to feminine as I wanted to portray a side of the story that’s from a male's perspective. This made me able to decide which scenes I would be doing first second and last: shaving, plucking eyebrows and putting on lipstick. with a three-person crew I was able to have complete control over how I wanted the scenes to look, extra crew mates like Tia helped me with the lighting imbalances when I couldn’t be behind the camera (as I was in the video) and my co-star Chiara asked to do scenes over again just to make sure we had more than one take from each shot, in case there were any small difficulties that could only be caught in post-production. Some of the ideas in my video were born out of pure accident, while I was filming, I only wanted the lights to turn on and off, but instead they kept flickering which I saw as a happy mistake. This led me to make the choice to leave it in and create smooth transitions from Chiara and I. While filming I had a second audio recorder going to make sure I could capture 2 sets of sound bites, afterward I had to sync up the recordings to the video which was something new for me.
